How many times have you heard  "Eat Something - You'll Feel Better!"??? 
Make a list of your favorite foods and beverages. Now, using your non-dominate hand, write a word which describes how you feel inside when you think of each particular food or drink. Review your list of foods/drinks and feelings. Write down any observation you have.

Note: Dr. Capacchione is famous for her pioneer work writing questions with your dominate hand and writing the answers in your non-dominate hand (see The Power of Your Other Hand - A course in channeling the inner wisdom of the right brain).

Again write these questions with your dominate hand, then switch hands and write the answers with your non-dominate hand. What is the significance of food in your life? Is eating related to any particular emotions? What are you drinking? Do you crave particular foods or beverages when you are in certain moods? If so, what are they? If possible, observe this pattern when it happens and try to write about it at the time (or as soon as possible).

BENEFITS: Here is an opportunity to become aware of your attitudes, feelings, and habits regarding physical nourishment. It can help you understand the deeper emotional significance that food has in your life beyond physical nourishment.

NOTE: These exercises have been very helpful for individuals with substance abuse problems. If you suffer with substance abuse of any kind (drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, etc) modify the exercise and focus on the substance in question rather than the food.

One thing becomes very clear: If we have low self esteem we will not feel good about our bodies, regardless of how we appear to the world. The reverse is true as well; not liking our body is a great excuse for not liking ourselves. We can always find things about our bodies that do not "measure up" to society's standards as we perceive them.

This raises the whole issue of motivation. Why do we want to change? Is it to please others and gain their approval? Is to "earn love"? Is it to feel powerful because we look good and are able to attract and/or reject others? In this book we will explore the question: "Who are you doing this for?"
