The Creative Journal for Children
A Guide for Parents, Teachers, and Counselors

72 simple exercises in writing and drawing to
foster your child's creativity, self-esteem and learning skills.

by Lucia Capacchione, Ph.D., A.T.R., R.E.A.T.

Exercises are explained in a "How,"  "Why," and "When" format making them very clear and easy to use.

These exercises for journal keeping are simple and enjoyable ways for children from kindergarten through junior high to:

  • express feelings and thoughts

  • feel comfortable about writing and drawing

  • acquire the habits of self-observation and reflection

  • foster a positive self-image

  • exercise imagination

  • learn to communicate

  • strengthen attention span and concentration

  • enrich academic skills

  • find strength and wisdom within

The Creative Journal Method is a tested technique used in schools and in child psychology counseling that can be used easily at home or in the classroom.

One of the most important aspect of journal keeping: it develops the individual's sense of personal responsibility, self-reliance, and self-respect.

Often, in the very act of drawing and writing a feeling or dream, the child resolves whatever is troubling him or her.

One child, who was having trouble with depression and rage, was asked to write her feelings down in her journal. After a page or so of venting anger, she decided she was tired of being mad and decided to "get off it," and went off to play.

"Lucia Capacchione's THE CREATIVE JOURNAL FOR CHILDREN provides a safe environment for children to find the buried treasure within: feelings, experiences, intuition, and dreams. Since grades and criticism are not part of her journal method, and sharing is voluntary and non threatening, children can relax and enjoy using this journal as a vehicle for self-exploration and expression."

Gerald G. Jampolsky, M.D.
- Author, Love is Letting Go of Fear

"THE CREATIVE JOURNAL FOR CHILDREN represents the leading edge of learning and where we need to go with our educational system. For the past fifteen years, Lucia Capacchione has been a forerunner in the creation of safe and nonjudgmental learning environments that kindle children's curiosity and encourage them to ask the kinds of questions that lead to greater learning. In witnessing the development and application of her methods in the school systems, I have seen children experience remarkable mental and emotional breakthroughs. THE CREATIVE JOURNAL FOR CHILDREN is for every parent and teacher who wants to give children full opportunity for creative expression and development."

Mona Brookes
- Author, Drawing With Children

"As a mother,  I have been to the depths and also to the ecstatic heights of what parenting has to offer. I have shared parenthood as half of a couple, been a single parent, and been the parent of stepchildren in a blended family. Today, as a grandparent, I can look back with the wisdom that only age and experience can bring and share this tool - "The Creative Journal. May your journey into parenting bring you as much life and love as it has me. You deserve the best . And so do your children and their children and all the children after them."

Lucia Capacchione, author, quote from The Creative Journal for Parents - A Guide to Unlocking Your Natural Parenting Wisdom

Aromatherapy - helps Kids too

I have used Young Living Essential Oils for years.

Young Living Essential Oils are powerful. Dr.Lucia Capacchione, PH.D. Pioneer Expressive Arts Therapist, Art Therapy book author and good friend of mine, stopped by with 2 of her grandsons. One felt very sick to his stomach so I put 1 drop of Peppermint oil in a glass of water, he drank it and in less than 5 minutes he felt fine.

Another good friend came over, a bit agitated about his recent divorce, I put 2 drops of our blend "Peace & Calming" on this 250 pound guy's neck, and he put 1 drop under his nose, and within 10 minutes- he was laid back and chilled out - saying "Golly, I think there is something to these oils!"

Believe me, this works great on hard-to-manage and hyperactive kids too, as a matter of fact, many parents have used our blend Peace & Calming with our supplement "Mineral Essence" as an alternative to Ritalin.
