About Dr. Lucia Capacchione

I would like to personally introduce you to my friend, mentor, and Pioneer Art Therapist, Lucia Capacchione (pronounced kapa kee own ee), Ph.D., Art Therapist Registered (A.T.R.), Registered Expressive Arts Therapist (R.E.A.T.)

art therapist, art therapist registered, A.R.T., expressive arts therapist, R.E.A.T., Lucia Capacchione, Lucia, Cappachione, journaling, journal, self-help books

She is an art therapist, professional artist, with combined sales of over 450,000 - she is a best selling author of 12 self help books,, psychologist, popular international workshop leader, and corporate talent development consultant who has worked for Hallmark, Mattel, and the Walt Disney Company.

Dr. Lucia is a remarkable person, she has been a pioneer in her field for over 25 years, and her work GETS RESULTS! That's why I'm featuring her "do-it-yourself" Art Therapy books and tapes in our Self Discovery Bookstore.

"Since the mid-1970's I have shared my discoveries at seminars for people of all ages and occupations: in schools and colleges, churches, corporations, counseling centers, and spiritual retreats."

"Over the years I have documented my discoveries and techniques in many books (Self Discovery Bookstore) The feedback has been so inspiring, especially in regard to the healing power of art, that I was moved to write this book. It includes not only my personal story and triumph over difficult odds and a life-threatening condition, but the impressive success stories of others."

"I became an art therapist in 1975 after healing an "incurable" disease primarily through spontaneous drawing and writing. At the time of my illness, I was a professional artist and teacher. I had never heard of art therapy, and there were no popular books on the subject. My spontaneous self-exploration through art was undoubtedly guided by a higher healing power within, taking me step by step back home to my Inner Self.

"When you read my story you will see how the Inner Artist has played the role of healer throughout my life. Through the writing and drawing exercises, affirmations, visualizations, meditations, and inspirational stories, I hope you will find the healing power of your own Inner Artist. I have found that tremendous love - for yourself and for others - becomes the overflowing pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. it comes with the joy of finding and expressing your own truth."

"Capacchione's work is great! I recommend her books to people I work with who have a variety of problems. I think both drawing and writing encourage a fundamental need that we have for self-expression. There may be an added benefit to writing in that it translates experiences into language--which helps the person to resolve a trauma more quickly."

PHILOSOPHY:

Lucia Capacchione, Ph.D., A.T.R., R.E.A.T

Every individual carries within her the voice of truth and personal guidance. Whether I function as an expressive arts therapist, author, teacher, workshop leader or corporate consultant my job is to help the individual find the god within, the voice of truth living in their very own heart, their own inner self.

I am fond of saying that my work is self-empowerment. That is my dedication, that is my method and that is reflected in a BODY of work which spans 20 years and yet which goes back to childhood, back to the sick bed I was in at 9 years old. For me, the expressive arts have provided the perfect vehicle for finding the truth by calling it forth from within and expressing it.

I have applied this philosophy in healing, in creativity, in education, in business and industry and in spirituality. My mission and my life's purpose, simply stated, is to find the God within through creative expression and to help others do the same.

BIOGRAPHY:

Lucia Capacchione, Ph.D., A.T.R., R.E.A.T

Originally a professional artist, she discovered the healing power of writing and drawing with the non-dominant hand while struggling with a life threatening illness. Dr. Capacchione's full recovery without medication led her to change careers and become an art therapist.

She has trained health care professionals, psychologists, educators and spiritual counselors internationally and continues to offer workshops for the general public.

Dr. Capacchione's method for reparenting the Inner Child is being used worldwide for healing abuse survivors. Many of her books are used as texts in expressive arts therapy, psychology, creative writing and art courses, and they have been translated into several languages. Her Creative Journal method has been used in prisons, elementary and secondary schools and colleges, childbirth classes and AIDS and HIV support groups.

Lucia Capacchione has spent 25 + years pioneering effective methods of education on all levels of learning, from early child development to postgraduate training. She holds a doctorate in psychology and has practiced art therapy with individuals, families, and groups. A  consultant to businesses and schools districts, a lecturer and workshop leader, and a trainer of health-care professionals and educators.

In the early 60's she trained as a Montessori teacher, then became Child Development Supervisor for the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, where she was responsible for establishing 12 Head Start programs. Later she taught child development classes in her local community college: Child, Family, and Community and Art for Teachers of Young Children.

She received instructor certification in Dr. Thomas Gordon's P.E.T. (Parent Effectiveness Training) and T.E.T. (Teacher Effectiveness Training.) She taught parents, teachers, and school administrators.

"As a mother,  I have been to the depths and also to the ecstatic heights of what parenting has to offer. I have shared parenthood as half of a couple, been a single parent, and been the parent of stepchildren in a blended family. Today, as a grandparent, I can look back with the wisdom that only age and experience can bring and share this tool - "The Creative Journal. May your journey into parenting bring you as much life and love as it has me. You deserve the best . And so do your children and their children and all the children after them."

Lucia Capacchione, author, quote from The Creative Journal for Parents - A Guide to Unlocking Your Natural Parenting Wisdom

The Creative Journal For Parents - A Guide to Unlocking Your Natural Parenting Wisdom

"THE CREATIVE JOURNAL FOR CHILDREN represents the leading edge of learning and where we need to go with our educational system. For the past fifteen years, Lucia Capacchione has been a forerunner in the creation of safe and nonjudgmental learning environments that kindle children's curiosity and encourage them to ask the kinds of questions that lead to greater learning. In witnessing the development and application of her methods in the school systems, I have seen children experience remarkable mental and emotional breakthroughs. THE CREATIVE JOURNAL FOR CHILDREN is for every parent and teacher who wants to give children full opportunity for creative expression and development."

Art Therapy

What is Art Therapy?
Written by Pioneer Expressive Art Therapist, Lucia Capacchione, Ph.D.

"Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which the client usually creates some form of artwork such as a drawing, doodles, a sculpture made of clay, collage, or other 2 or 3 dimensional art. None of these techniques require any special talent, experience or training in the “arts”.

The artwork is then used as a focus for reflection in words between the client and therapist. This artwork is used in much the same way as dreams are used in therapy because both artwork and dreams access the unconscious very rapidly.

Using a journal or diary, the individual is guided with focus questions about different areas of their life. Most of the time the suggested activities begin with a drawing or some form of art expression. This is followed by reflective writing about the images and the feelings captured in the artwork, in your journal.

One of the great advantages of art therapy is it fosters use of both sides of the brain. The nonverbal art expression is primarily a right brain process; the writing is coming from the left-brain language centers.

Dr. Capacchione’s Creative Journal Method includes another technique that integrates both hemispheres of the brain! As documented in her ground breaking book ”The Power of Your Other Hand”. This technique includes written dialogs using Both Hands alternately writing with the non-dominate hand is a proven method for letting the left brain know what the right brain is thinking. This is a powerful tool for use in therapy and also for opening up creativity in all areas of ones life. None of these techniques require any special talent, experience or training in the arts”.

"Capacchione's work is great! I recommend her books to people I work with who have a variety of problems. I think both drawing and writing encourage a fundamental need that we have for self-expression. There may be an added benefit to writing in that it translates experiences into language--which helps the person to resolve a trauma more quickly."
